G.W. Richmire (1920–1921)
The following memoir is reprinted from the 1958 Journal of the Southern California-Arizona Conference, which was kindly provided, along with the accompanying photograph, by Linda Larsen, archivist of the California-Pacific Conference.
George Willis Richmire came of good American stock; his father was a Canadian and his mother a citizen of the United States. He was born in Cardinal, Ontario, Canada on June 19, 1874 and lived far beyond the allotted three score years and ten. His was a long and useful life and he entered into his reward on Feb. 12, 1958. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Santa Monica, Calif. Rev. Leo C. Kline officiated at his service.
At 13 years of age George made his decision for Christ in a little Presbyterian church in Canada. This was the beginning of the ruling purpose and desire of his life. He felt the call of God to the Christian ministry and enrolled in Lima Seminary to begin his preparation. Later he did post-graduate work in Drew Seminary. He was appointed to Hemlock in the Genesee Conference in 1906 and was received on trial the same year.
For two years during World War I he did work in the camps under the YMCA. In 1920 he transferred to the Wilmington Conference and in 1921 came to the South- ern California Conference and was appointed to Bisbee, Ariz. He was received into this Conference in 1922, served several of our churches until his retirement in 1945.
His home and family life were all that a man in the ministry could desire. In January 1896 he was united in marriage to Mercy Elizabeth Coons, who passed away on Dec. 28, 1917. To them were born four children; Mabel May who died on March 25, 1916; Pauline, Laura and George who survive their father. On Feb. 2, 1919, George married Clara A. Hardy, who lived and loved and served with him in his work of the ministry until Feb. 19, 1941, when she also passed away. In May of 1946 he was united in marriage to Ann Elizabeth Gemerich, who for twenty years had been the efficient and beloved superintendent of nurses in the Santa Monica Hospital. Ann has given to George during these latter years, comfort, care and companionship. She survives him and lives in the blessed memory of twelve wonderful years together.
Brother Richmire was a man of strong convictions, great devotion to the church and a deep evangelistic spirit. Everywhere he went he endeavored to win men for Christ. He was loved by his parishioners and many of them traveled long distances to be present at his funeral service. As an evidence of his concern for the church and its wider interests, he was instrumental while at Arroyo Grande, in saving to Methodism the lovely Arroyo Grande Camp ground where hundreds of our young people have assembled from year to year in study, recreation and dedication.
